"A slam bam action show that cuts right to the core. "

"Guyver is about to wreck havoc right into your screen!"

After starting as a manga and being adapted to a 12 episode anime series, an OVA, and two live action films, ADV Films would like to welcome all of you to the new, improved, and ultra-violent face of one of the most popular sci-fi heros ever, Guyver.

But before we get into the review, lets give the Guyver virgins a quick rundown of what a Guyver is. Guyvers are symbiotic bio-mechanisms that enhance its host's capabilities, but greatly transform its wearer into an entirely different organism with bio-boosted armor. It also greatly increases the brain's functionality, as the host's brain is the only organic thing that is not augmented in appearance.

This up-to-date version of Guyver comes in 26 episodes, and volume 1, "Days of Future Past", contains the first four episodes. Here we will see how high school student Sho Fukamachi and his friend Tetsuro Segawa gets in tangle with the sinister brotherhood known as Chronos. Sho ends up gaining possession of one of their top secret weapons, the Guyver Unit 1. This unlikely event will lead Sho to multiple encounters against Chronos as they try to retrieve the unit back from him, and as he protects the ones closest to him. Little does he know, there are two other people that gained possession to two other units, and are waiting in the wings to get a piece of the action. Sho will have to face them eventually...

Due to the existence of previous incarnations of the story, fans might find the series a bit predictable, but this is one version that Guyver faithfuls can enjoy since it follows the manga in every step of the way. And for those of you that are not familiar with the series, prepare yourself, as Guyver is about to wreck havoc right into your screen!

EXTRAS:
As mentioned in the review, the series closely follows the manga, and so the one of the extras is a manga/anime comparison. The DVD also includes commentary from ADV faithful Guyver fans Rod Peters, Jack Glauser, and ADR Director Charlie Campbell - who is ready to talk about "MacGyver". The disc also includes the usual Clean and Closing animation, ADV Previews, and DVD Credits.

IN SUMMARY:
A slam bam action show that cuts right to the core. With sinister plots well woven in, Guyver is one sci-fi action series shifted into overdrive.
