PAPUWA: WILD THINGS (VOL. 1) [ADVANCE REVIEW]

Prepare yourself for absolute bedlam in the wacky new anime series Papuwa! The story: girly boy has the dreaded power of the secret-stone eyes and destroyed the first Papuwa Island. Girly boy went into a long sleep. A strange voice woke up girly boy Kotaro. He ends up on Papuwa Island with no memory of who he is or what he can do. Girly boy is befriended by strange boy named Papuwa who is immensely, crazy strong and nice. Papuwa lives with ninja/maid guy named Liquid and best friend, a furry being named Chappy. Girly boy Kotaro stays with Papuwa. Place where girly boy comes from goes nuts that Kotaro is missing. They send assassins after girly boy. Hilarity and strangeness ensues.

Although the series is named after the strange guy named Papuwa, the first volume centers more on Kotaro. He is young, arrogant and acts quite spoiled and prissy. Nevertheless he soon relaxes into spending his days on this crazy island with his new friends. Liquid is aware of the danger should Kotaro awaken but otherwise they all seem unconcerned and go about their bizarre business. Speaking of bizarre, weird characters that exist in this anime include a hermaphrodite snail that spontaneously gives birth now and again as well as a fish that wears fish net stockings as it has legs (the fish net stockings are a pun that I believe is very much intended). When assassins come to the island, they are the most bungling and absurd assassins you?re ever likely to witness. And that?s what Papuwa seems to be all about: finding the most nonsensical route and running with it. It?s a bright, vibrant simple animation that is all about the laughs and leaves reason far, far behind.
