Papuwa Vol. 1 R1 DVD Reviewed by sothis
Synopsis:
(Taken from the AniRec Database)
When the young Kotaro (errr...Rotaro) washes up on Papuwa island with a case of amnesia, he has no idea that his life is about to take a turn for the bizarre. With housemates such as the man-maid Liquid, an asexual snail and a transsexual fish with legs, Rotaro will have his hands full! But beneath the tranquility of the island lies a dangerous secret that could destroy the island, and the answer lies only with Rotaro. With enemies from his past afoot, his friends trying to eat him and a giant poisonous mushroom trying to get him high, what?s a young boy to do?!
Packaging & Menu: 0 / 10
This is a screener copy, so I can?t comment on the packaging yet. The menu, if it stays this way, is great! It shows a picture of Papuwa walking on a circular island (thus, it repeats). The theme song plays in the background, and the menu options are on small fans.
Extras: 0 / 10
I can?t comment on the features yet until I see the full version.
Video: 9 / 10
The video is remarkably clean, with barely any loss in quality or artifacting. Colors come across crisp and vibrant. I?m impressed!
Audio: 9 / 10
Papuwa has, hands down, the best dub I?ve heard from ADV. Originally I was thinking Saiyuki is the only dub I?ve liked more, but after thinking about it I would definitely say Papuwa is the best. The poisonous mushroom?s voice actor deserves a raise; he is HILARIOUS. Every character is perfectly fit for their role and there is a lot of creative interpretation of the lines (while keeping with the same idea). Slang is used and in general it doesn?t sound scripted at all! I would happily watch the dub over the sub in this case. In general, the audio comes across beautifully.
Content: 10 / 10
I?ll cut to the chase: Papuwa is the most hilarious anime I?ve ever seen. Cromartie was the big winner up until now, and it definitely still is at the top of my list? but Papuwa is absolutely ridiculous as far as spastic random comedies go. It truly is a testament to the comedic value of a series if I find myself laughing out loud the entire time.
In general, Papuwa tells the tale of Kotaro, a young boy who holds the power of a powerful stone in his eyes. This caused him to destroy the first Papuwa island years ago. Now, he?s washed ashore on the second Papuwa island with a hefty case of amnesia, and a bizarre group of friends for companions. There?s the stunted Papuwa who looks like the main character in the old school NES Hudson?s Adventure Island, Liquid the man-maid, an asexual snail who gives birth all the time (and consequently, the characters eat its young, hahaha!!), and transsexual fish that have legs and fishnets. Wow. Seriously folks, this series is just ridiculous on so many levels, and that makes it wonderful. Only 3 episodes are on this screener copy, and every one made me laugh out loud non stop. Episode 2 was definitely my favorite, involving a poisonous hallucinogenic mushroom that keeps trying to get everyone high (and succeeds).
The visuals are gorgeous, with bright colors and lively characters. The music sounds very jungle-like and is quite appropriate.
Really, there?s not much else to say about Papuwa, because it?s so incredibly random that, well, there isn?t much to say except that IT?S FUNNY. In the same vein as Guu and Abenobashi, Papuwa does not fail to please. You simply must see this!
