Elfen Lied -- Vector One
Written by Andromeda

Lucy is a cold blooded killer possessing a weapon like no other. Nyu is like an innocent child trapped in an adult body. What do the two of them have in common? They just so happen to share the same body.

Breaking free from her captivity, Lucy escapes her prison killing twenty three armed men in five minutes, cutting their bodies apart with some invisible weapon. What kind of human being could kill so many in such a short time? A Diclonius, a genetically mutated human with horns and some type of telekinetic ability. Fearing her escape into a populated area a sharp shooter tries to take her out, only to miss his target, striking the helmet she wears.

Kohta returns to the beach that he hasn't seen since his childhood, eight years ago. Going down to the beach with his cousin Yuka shortly after arriving, the two do a little reminiscing about the past, the last time they had been to the beach together with his little sister. While remembering the time long past a girl stumbles onto the beach from the ocean wearing nothing and having a head wound. Big eyed, she just stares at them confused, replying to their questions with one word. 'Nyuu..' And so Kohta names her, Nyu.

Deciding to take care of her, Kohta, Yuka and Nyu stay at a large house owned by Yuka's mom that had once been a restaurant. So it had plenty of rooms to spare. Their stay together is a bit humorous and at times misunderstood as a romance begins to bloom between Kohta and Yuka. But this happy home isn't destined to stay happy for long. Well armed and highly trained soldiers are looking for the evil thing that's known as 'Lucy'. Sending out another Diclonius they track her down. Will they find the killer Lucy or will they find the sweet innocent Nyu?

Elfen Lied is an impressive anime. The artwork is amazing, clean, crisp, the colors so vibrant, the drawings at times almost looking real. It really shows how far anime has come in style when compared to others.

The musical score is instrumental and seems to fit perfectly to the scenes and storyline so well, which one would find hard to believe if they were told about it and had not seen it. Pairing soft music, classical in composure with violent scenes isn't something often seen. It was pulled off quite well in this. The opening theme is soft with a sad undertone while the ending theme is a bit upbeat compared to it, but fits so well with the rest of the music you'll hear while watching this.

I will warn you, there is nudity and a lot of blood with a dash of gore. There's nothing like seeing a heart pop right out of someone's body, land in the lap of another, and still see it beat. There isn't a high level of nudity, only what's warranted really. While in captivity, the Diclonius aren't clothed, only heavily restrained. And of course, there is the bath scene that shows the comical innocent side of Lucy known as Nyu.

I watched Elfen Lied dubbed and I must say, I was blown away. Every word used fit perfectly. Nothing was said that seemed out of place. Frankly, I don't think I'd enjoy it more if I had watched it sub-titled. I can not wait for the second DVD to come out!

My Recommendation: Buy It
