"Angelic Layer is a very fun show to watch."
One of Clamp's new millennium titles Angelic Layer hit vast audiences and received lots of positive reviews. Now, it is available on home DVD in English. Originally titled Kidou Tenshi Angelic Layer, ADV decided to name it Battle Doll Angelic Layer. They are dolls, but I think they didn't want to translate it from the original kanji...
Meet Misaki Suzuhara, a middle school student. She just arrived in Tokyo to live with her Aunt. She seems to be lost, but occupies herself with a huge TV near a huge building. Two characters were in a grid battle ground in what seemed to be a kind of virtual reality sequence. The crowd is amazed at the sight of the battle and cheer the competitors on. There, Misaki meets someone in a doctor's suit who explains to her what she is watching.
Each competitor is a mobile angel, also referred to as a doll. They are created from eggs that you can buy at any toy or electronics store. You can evolve it from the starting stage and set its physical parameters such as speed and strength. Misaki is truly amazed at the sort of technology and idea behind it. She immediately runs to the store to check it out. The doctor follows and teachers her more about what she must do. Unfortunately, the doctor is perceived as some kind of pervert and is taken away to the police station, lol!
She finally arrives at her aunt's place and tells her all about her trip to Tokyo. She also shows her aunt the products she bought. The aunt totally recognized the products, but didn't give away too much detail. Her expressions seem to show that she knows all about the organization of battle dolls. They also talk about the last time she met her mom (which was way back in kindergarten). Somehow, you can notice that her mom ties very well with the organization of battle dolls as well.
After their talk, Misaki takes a bath (which she must do to set up her doll) and then give it some hair and physical attributes. Her doll is completed. Now what is she going to do?
Angelic Layer is a very fun show to watch. There are some perverted references, so it may still be too immature for children. The character designs may remind you of Card Captor Sakura. That is because it is a CLAMP title just like Sakura. The DVD also comes with an art gallery, sketches, clean op/ed, and voice actor commentary. So if you're looking for something fun to watch, give this one a go!
