I believe this is the first anime to be on this site and if not, whatever. I recieved Lady Death in the mail and when I put it in my DVD player, I didn't know what to expect from it. Just had seen a trailer and knew it was based on comics. I have never read any of the comics so I can't say if it lives up to them. In my opinion, I liked the movie. It wasn't the greatest anime I have ever seen but I found myself liking it. I didn't like how it all felt like it was a big flashback instead of a story. I know the movie was 75% a flashback, but it felt like a summary for the whole movie. I wasn't digging that but I was digging the gore in this, and the interesting yet short storyline. What is this about?
Hope is the daughter of a power hungry tyrant named Lucifer who is after souls so he can become all mighty and powerful. When he kidnaps and takes Hope's true love's soul, Niccollo, she finds out what her father is up to. But it's to late....the towns people became wise and stormed the castle. After Lucifer escapes into hell, the only one to survive the wreakage is Hope so she is believed to be a part of Lucifer's plan so of course in those days...the first thing they do...is BURN THEM!!! FIRE!! FIRE!!! FIRE!! HEHE! So as she dies, she makes a deal with Lucifer's messenger boy to spare her life and join him in his reign in hell. The things people do when they are being burned alive. Well of course Lucifer betrays her and lies so she is sent to the deepest bowels of hell but there is more to HOPE then meets the eye. She has powers inside her and when she channels them, with the help of an ex-armorour, she becomes LADY DEATH and is sworn to kill Lucifer and free her mother and her love.
It's a decent story idea and I dug it very much so. I was interested in it but the thing it lacks was the length, a very short 89 minutes. But the movie does showcase itself some pretty cool visuals, some nice animation, a interesting storyline, and enough red liquid to keep you full for weeks to come. The acting isn't as bad as most anime's so that was also a plus. Also the background in this are just flat out devilish. Nice touch, very nice.
To the acting, we have Christine M. Auten as Hope/Lady Death and I think she did a nice job with the voice over. Mike Klienhenz did a solid job as Lucifer, he filled the role pretty good. Rob Mungle as Cremator was really good, as was Andy McAvin as Pagan. Chris Patton had his lines that were good but he is barley in it as Niccolli. To the directing, Andrew Orjuela does a solid jobdirecting this trip into the bowels of hell. This being his directorial debut and all, I think he did a solid job. I was entertained by the visuals and wouldn't mind seeing a continuation to this.
To the gore, we get lots of gore, not as much as some anime's but it's enough to make for an entertaining time. Head's role, arms sliced off, blood splatters everywhere, human burned alive, and lots more. As for nudity, its a cartoon you fucken pervs!!! But you do get sexual demon women groping and shitlike that. But nothing that, I would consider good...granted I don't tend to really go for the whole hentai shit. I go more for the REAL thing instead....just my thoughts.
I say, if you are into Anime check this out. Even if you are not, it's still good enough that it will keep you entertained. This was just released on DVD so check it out if you get a chance, if you are a fan of the comics, you should check it out cause you are a friggin fan! So yeah.....
