FEATURE: New this week from ADV Films

After the spectacular month that was July, August may seem like a bit of a let down with only two anime releases in the first week. While things look like they have slowed down, these two titles are anything but slow. Both are titles that should be among your must watch list because of their compelling stories and interesting characters.

Kaleido Star
Volume 3: Great Expectations

Sora faced her fears in the last volume and earned the title role in Kaleido Stage's new production. While she feels that the toughest part is over, things prove to get tougher as now she must win over the audience. Not to be outdone, Layla returns for an all new production, and Sora must prove her worth to star directly against Layla. It's one challenge right after another that makes Kaleido Star one of the most intriguing titles out there right now. Each story continues to pull the viewer in with its strong mix of comedy and drama and intriguing characters. As the show has progressed, each story becomes more compelling than the last. This is definitely a must watch show.

Being volume 3, each of the cast members have really settled into their roles. Cynthia Martinez continues to bring life to Sora, keeping her easy to relate to. This first half of Kaleido Star is Sora's journey, and Cynthia's performance continues to keep the viewers comfortable with that trip. Sandra Krasa's performance of Layla manages to soften up a bit, with the realization that Sora is much more than a mere annoyance. This growth fits well with the story development and Sora has managed to pierce Layla's defenses. Kira Vincent Davis also gets a chance to shine with a story that focuses on Anna's past. When her father is introduced, we begin to understand why Anna loves to play the comic role. Overall, the cast maintains their level of excellence in performances, and continues to grow as their characters grow.

Saiyuki
Volume 12: New World Order

The end has come and a new world is about to be born. As Homura gains the last part of the puzzle he needs, Sanzo and the others have demons from their past to face. While this story does not represent the end of their true quest, Sanzo, Goku, Hakkai and Gojyo face challenges that will surely be their end. The culmination of this story arc will have fans sitting on the edge of their seats as it roars through its final conclusion. And just to keep the fans happy, Kougaiji and his friends make an appearance to try and help in the end. The drama and action are kept high, so fans will get plenty of what they came to love this series for.

After 12 volumes, it?s a sure bet that the actors know what they are doing. Under Steven Foster's direction, the main four have definitely hit their stride. David Matranga as Sanzo, Greg Ayres as Goku, Braden Hunt as Cho Hakkai and Illich Guardiola as Sha Gojyo all fit well with their characters and will remain fan favorites in these roles. The rest of the supporting cast also remains strong with solid performances from Vic Mignogna as Kougaiji, Hilary Haag as Lirin and Jason Douglas as Homura. For the fans that will be missing these actors in these roles, don't worry as they'll have a chance to once again don the tights in the upcoming movie release.
